I haven't come up with any clever retorts about your Florida/Michigan
theory.  I have been to Florida to visit an errant niece who seemed to
think that Pizza Hut in Florida was a better place to work than Pizza Hut
in Michigan.  We visited her in July.  My poor mother (God rest her soul)
ended up in the hospital.  I think it was 120 heat index. I swore I would
never take my mother anywhere again!  I was glad to get her back home to
Michigan!  My niece tried to migrate home and made it as far as Brunswick,
Georgia. We finally went down and fetched her a couple of years ago (I
personally drove the big Ryder truck home!).  Guess where she is now?  Da
U.P., eh?  And of course, there have been rumors for years that they sort
of want to secede and become their own state and call it Superior. 
Sheesh.... can't keep that girl anywhere decent to keep an eye on her!!! 
But, the U.P. is a great place to RIDE!!  There are 3 UP there.  (Sorry,
Steph.....I do try, really I do!!  Angie started it!).
