I just attended a talk by a local vet who warned horse owners not to let
their horses get to the acorn crop this year.  The oaks are going wild in
producing acorns.  This NW FL vet says there are 2 problems with acorn
consumption:
    1.  The extra nutrition from the acorns can act like too much grain and
cause founder problems in susceptible horses.
    2.   The rough hulls of the acorns and the sharp point on the end can be
very rough on the digestive system.

He says if your horses are eating them like candy you should get the horses
away from the acorns.  Either remove the acorns from the field or move the
horses elsewhere.
