Some people (well, maybe it's just me) regard beer as "food". Just think of
it as a potatoe. Carbohydrates are good for you. And I think the guy was
just saying that trotting is easier if your belly's not empty. Try not to be
too judgmental on us beer drinking endurance riders.
We only "eat alot of potatoes" the after the run is complete. I don't carry
a six pack with me while riding (it shakes up the beer too much when you do
that) and only open up one the day of the race for my horse. It calms him
down a bit, and God knows I need all the help I can get before the start.
