I have seen the same swelling on my horses every fall.  I was horrified at 
first but since it didn't seem to bother them I soon accepted it as something 
"that happens".  The first time I saw it was in Maryland.  The vet there said 
there was a fungus on the grass that caused it.  It lasts about a month and 
then is gone for the rest of the year.  I am now in Arizona and just had my 
horses come up last evening with the same thing.  If anyone knows what causes 
this, please shed some light.
