Hey Patty! don't feel too badly (or beat yourself to a mash). We've all
been there, done that. Its a learning curve (and a lot of luck). I had a
similar experience with my horse (Harca) at a 50 a couple of years ago. He
looked great all day (first hot day of the summer), got all a's on his card,
then colicked AFTER he vetted out. (a late middle of the pack finish). Hind
sight being what it is (20/20) I can see now that he wasn't eating as
enthusiastically or drinking with his usual gusto (still doing both though).
Sometimes things just don't work for whatever reason. We do our best and the
horse does the best he can, and there is still trouble. the important thing
I took away from my experience is to look for the nuances, not just the
overall picture (if that makes sense). It is in the tiny little details
(that only you know) that the horse's overall picture really lies. I hope
that makes sense. Anyway, don't get too spooked, and don't give up!
Sylvia
