It's too bad that we have to feel so vulnerable but I think that it's
important to be a realist and be prepared to protect yourself. Any thoughts?

I'm still unsure on the gun issue. However, a while back a friend and I
drove to Texas on one of our semi-lunatic riding adventures. The brand new
motorhome broke down leaving us stranded for hours on I-10, and then even
longer (days) in a town that was well on its way to becoming a ghost town.
We ended up parked next to a real-live saloon (other than the mechanic's it
was the only business that wasn't boarded up) with some pretty seedy looking
characters who were giving us a thorough once-over (if you get my drift).
The horses were tied to the trailer and I worried that some cowboy would
decide to go for a joy ride (or God knows what). Anyway, when I nervously
asked what the heck we'd do if one of these characters decided to give us
some trouble, my friend showed me the gun stashed in the motorhome. I have
to admit that at that particular point I was not unhappy to see a gun.
Luckily, we never had to use it and I'm still not sure how I feel about the
whole gun issue. But as long as we insist on heading out for parts unknown on
these idiotic adventures, maybe it isn't a bad idea to be able to protect
ourselves. (Flame away)
