riding in the dark
Just to be on the safe side, it wouldn't hurt to wear a bell when
riding at night in hilly country in the Southeast. Bobcats routinely
take down much bigger prey than rabbits, and have been known to attack
horses when they or their litters are threatened.
Not to mention coyotes, who are a lesser threat, but one that
shouldn't be taken lightly.
I will agree that the biggest threat are humans, though. With all the
talk of bells, it occurred to me that it wouldn't really hurt to carry
one of those police whistles to scare off ANY species of attacker.

I heard a wild cat at longstreets this year(sure he sounded
>>cool)but I have heard that an animal will go the other way at an
>unfamiliar >sound.
Here in the Southeast I assume that was a bobcat. Of all the animals
I've seen while riding, they're the most elusive. Not to mention small.
Don't think anything bigger than a rabbit need worry. I'm perfectly
happy to stay in the East where the bears are black and the cats are
small. You guys out west can guard the "true wilderness". The only
animal I'm scared of in the woods round here is a human.
