I use a SS with a neoprene girth. I rigged a strip of velcro around the girth that the electrode attaches to. I also use the curly (springy) lead wire so there isn't a wire flopping around when I ride. Where I had a problem is with the electrode at the wither area. Took me a long time to realize that with my high-withered horse, I was putting the electrode in an area where there wasn't consistent contact when we were trotting. Now, I am getting consistent readings.
