This is an average that can very greatly due to the individual horse &/or
the terrain. The best way is to actually measure a mile or 2 of dirt road
and time your horse as you travel at various gaits. It really doesn't take
very long to learn to estimate your horses speed at each gait, and then you
can determine about how far you've travelled anywhere. (i.e. a mile in 10
min. = 6 mph)
