Re: Let's Discuss Worming
Haha! Sylvia - you are talking to the person who has done the 'mother of
all dumb things' (involving a horse in a trailer). I'm still
recovering...and that accident happened the Monday after the July 4th
weekend.
Interesting point

tight

When you did OT how far in advance did you worm? I've read on the FDA
websites that it can take up to a full month till ivermectin leaves the
horses system. I don't know if that would affect their performance at all,
though we are talking a toxic substance (toxic to the worms for certain --
but what about the horse?)
I think what you are doing is probably exactly right - every two months. I
remember asking one of my vets that question once, and he promptly loaded
me down with volumes of information (pages and pages) to read.
At the one clinic I went to they said that the Strongid C daily wormer is
only about 2% of the dose of what a regular worming dose would be. So
technically if you are worming within a couple of weeks of a ride, the
horse is going to have that much or more residual wormer still left in
their system - (I'm just guessing here, don't know that for a fact) so I've
always been paranoid about worming a horse and then doing a ride within a
month of that.
