There must be some guidelines, like a certain time limit in
order to complete.
And you can't tell me that there is not going to be people who
get caught
up in the whole idea of it and not race the whole way. People
are going
to get caught up in it and start racing between themselves. Esp.
if there
is no penalties for poor P/R's and coming in too soon. I know of
some people
that I could think of right now, how would race between
themselves to
see who could come in first. There are reasons, (for the benefit
of the horse)
why the CTR's are set up with so many rules. Having shorter
distances without
rules is dangerous.

How many people looking at doing a 13 or 15 mile ride are going
to condition
and learn to pace at home? How many of those people are even
going to make
an effort to even learn about conditioning and pacing? I know
that there will
be some, but far too many are just going to show up and do it.
They will
know nothing about P/R's, the signs of dehydration, pacing and
they will
think that there horses can easily do the ride. I know I have
seen these
types at the CTR before. But the rules of the CTR keep them in
check. A open
free for all with minimal rules could be disastrous.
