Wendy,
Not everybody riding at the back of the pack is there because their horse is
"draggy & yucky". Of course horses feel better when they've had enough to
eat and drink. Since we live where summer rides have abundant vegetation, we
prefer to let them snack as they go, not run from check to check & then
refuel. Our goal is high career mileage on each horse. I know it's a
different concept and requires different horse management than running to
win. I believe both goals fall under the concept of endurance, and I wish to
see rides managed to allow both types of competitors fulfill their goals.
