Re: Unidentified subject!

Many ride managers provide us with "rules" but it hardly covers the tons of
questions a newbie has at their first, second or tenth rides! Since so
many rides have concurrent endurance and CTR rides on the same weekend and
many of us start out on a CTR and then have opportunity to try a 25 LD, it
is very confusing untangling the do's and don't's. Can I sponge now? Can
someone help me with my horse now? ETC. I was totally confused at first
what I could and couldn't do for my horse. I understood the forward motion
mounted vs. I can walk the whole way if I want (yeah right!) on
endurance... but boy, it took me a while to get it straight!! I still have
to change my whole mindset if I am riding a CTR for some reason because I
have to consciously remind myself what I can and can't do...don't want to
break any rules!! I was lucky that all of the vets at my early rides were
(and still are!) happy to answer all the dumb newbie questions I have and
if they didn't the RMs or trail bosses did.... I think those 15 mile
novice rides would do well to include a wealth of info from AERC, UMECRA
(or whatever regional organization you're from) and your local
club....handouts, sample score sheets, CTR vs. endurance, all those things
mentioned previously. We had a local "mock" CTR and I put together a ton
of stuff... including some stuff from ridecamp. The people loved it and
several have gone or want to go to rides next year! That is too cool....
But it costs money. Always a hitch somewhere, eh?
