Hey Maggie! Stop beating yourself up. My best guess would be that you
walked alot more than normal and that (the sitting) will sometimes sore a
back. Especially if you were not feeling well and weren't riding as lightly
as you might normally. It happens and we all learn from those experiences,
right? I would go easy on the massaging and try mainly cold compresses (if
there is still heat/swelling), then try rubbing aloe vera gel and arnica on
the sore area -- very soothing. You can get both at a health food store
(some pharmacies carry them too). I think you guys were brave to set out on
an 85 mile trek on your own like that. I'm sure Jonathan will be back to
normal soon. Oh yeah, don't be horriffied if the hair falls out where the
swelling appeared :( Unfortunately, that can happen. Rubbing Arnica in can
help prevent the white hair from growing in. Sounds like voodoo, but it
works. Good luck!
Sylvia
