Jean Wonser cpfjean@bellsouth.net The fact that competitors can see, or have scouted the Finish does not have much to do with the final amount of safety involved in a race to the Finish; For those that have never ridden in a real track gallop to the Finish I can assure them it is sorta like riding a freight train downhill with a tail wind to boot; My horses are quite well trained to race, on the bit, and know to stop when I back off the bit, shift my weight to rear, and maybe ask a 'whoa' too; But the fact remains just because riders can see something happening ahead in a true gallop the time to react and do something may be of little consequence. An additional factor is in a nose to nose contest there are horses so competitive they will disregard any rider aids for the time being too. I have not read all this stuff about Finish line safety but the remark I did read about seeing the Finish sorta is unrealistic about actual racing conditions. Basically anyone who stands on sidelines of a Finish should have same attitude as riders do" It is a dangerous game". ride safe and see you on the Trail, usually in SE!
