[Karen Sullivan] I question this too, and ask the vets; why do breeders claim that the first foal a mare produces is not the "best", and that it is generally smaller at maturity? Seems that even if the foal is small at birth; it will "catch up" to the genetic code.
I am a great example of a low birth weight baby (5 lbs due to mother smoking through pregnancy and only gaining 20 or so lbs). I was a skinny child, barely ate enough-yet I attained almost 6 ft. height.
I have a filly that is 14.2 and a half at age 3plus. Mare is 15 hands; stallion is 15.3. Is this baby going to grow??!!!
