Cecily, I have recently switched my 2 arabs to Myler bits.  Both the
horses and I love them!!!  The Myer brothers have also written a really
good little book about bits, "A whole bit better," available from Toklat. 
(It has a really interesting postscript about horse mouth/head/neck anatomy
by Dr. Joyce Harman, too.)
    I used to think my arabs needed 4 3/4" bits but
I got tired of searching for them so now I use 5" bits which work fine. 
(My guys are geldings and don't have particularly typey, small muzzled
heads though.)  I would think any tack store worth its salt could
order a 4 3/4" bit for you.

Does anyone know a good resource/catalog for 4 and 3/4" bits?
I'd like to find a Tom Thumb, Argentine snaffle, or possibly a
Kimberwick with that size mouthpiece.  I also don't want the part
on a shanked bit that attaches to the bridle ( sorry, can't
remember the name for it)to dig into my horse'supper jaw. It
seems to me that I can't be the only Arab owner with this need.

Also, has anyone had any experience with Myler bits? Shrake bits?
Some other company that you'd recommend or steer clear of?
