The CTR's that I have attended start riders in pairs, so that a person can
buddy up with someone. That helps to alleviate the problem. Also, whether
it is endurance or CTR, my MO with a green horse is to mount up BEFORE the
start and ride off in the other direction. Then I can come back to the start
when the coast is clear and the horse has not had the opportunity to get all
jazzed up. My ex-husband was sufficiently injured to preclude his being able
to ride at one ride where he did exactly what you described--we were parked
near the start line, and he left his green horse tied there while everyone
dashed by. THEN he attempted to get on and was quite unceremoniously dumped
after about 5 good bucks across the vetting area... I was standing with two
other ladies clear across camp and got a bird's-eye view of the whole
incident--we could see it getting ready to happen, and all three of us were
standing there saying, "He's gonna get piled!" but we were too far away to
try to stop him... In retrospect, the incident is humorous... :-)
