improving the trot

Hi All!
I have a horse I love almost all of - everything except his trot. It  is so bouncy I feel like I'm being launched up and away.  It gets better as he gets faster but we don't go at "race pace" all the time. His shoulder is a little straight but within reasonable limits;  his hind legs are more straight than Z'd and he is an ex-race horse.  We are beginning to work on rounding-collection-working from behind which I hope will help.  He is not a daisy-cutter but raises his knees a bit.  I'm looking for ways to lengthen his stride and change the "upness" of it to "forwardness."
If I can't create a trot I can ride how about encouraging him to canter?  He has a really nice canter.  Can horses do well cantering more and trotting less?
Thanks for your help!
Laney and
Blazin Saddles who's liking the trails & trotting his best
Dudley who's now a reining horse and
Dino who'll get his chance to show what a Spanish Mustang can do on the trails as soon as he's old enough
