In 1993 I rode the Western States 50 which was supposed to be the last half of Tevis, however Potato Richardson, ride manager, had to add extra trail early in the ride because we couldn't cross the American River due to high water. The ride started at 1 pm from Devil's Thumb and we finished just up the trail past Franciscos. All in all it was a good warm up for Tevis which Moonshyne and I completed a month later. I'm not sure how many years after 1993 the ride continued. I was grateful for the opportunity to ride the California Loop under actual 'ride' conditions prior to Tevis and it was fun starting a ride during the middle of the day. My husband and I drove to Loomis, near Auburn, on Friday and stayed with friends and then drove to the ride Saturday morning.
