I would generally come in on the cheap side, I think, because I really tend
to pinch pennies. Our horses are on our property, so I don't pay board, and
I don't figure a "keeping cost" for them, as that land would be there anyway
and I would probably spend more money landscaping it! Onthe other hand, we
live in San Diego, where 110 lb bale of bermuda at its low price of the
season is $9.99 a bale. I figure my normal ffeed cost is $60 a month per
horse. I shoe every 8 weeks only during ride season April to November: $280
a year for shoes and call it another $100 for trims. Average 1 vet call a
year @ about $150.00
Ride expenses: $70 a ride plus gas, call it $100 a ride.
Tack. Here's the rub. Spent $700 on a new saddle last year, bet I spend
$500 a year on "stuff"
Trailer: $78 annual registration.
$720 a year feed
$380 a year shoes
$150 a year vet
$400 on actual rides
$500 a year on tack and stuff
$100 on trailer and related stuff
$2150 a year for one horse. I have two and it really is cheaper to have
two - the hauling cost is the same; the $500 on tack is really for both
horses. I figure about $3500 a year for both horses.
This does NOT take into account TRUCK expenses. Just ordered a new one. If
we are really being truthful here, I have to add 7 years of $500 a month
truck payments of which I would apply 1/3 to horse related expenses, due to
the way we use the truck.
So, add another $170 a month or $2040 a year for the truck.
Hmm, no wonder I work all these extra hours!
Feel free to post all or part back to ridecamp!
