Nope, Drin is right. In "modern times" we often see fit front-running 50's
do the first 25 in a time comparable (or sometimes faster) than what the 25's
"win" it in. In "olden times" when 25's were sanctioned for full points, we
saw flat-out sprints on the 25's, and then lined 'em up for IV's. I can
remember John Sumerlin sprinting a 25 in Vale, Oregon, in 1:09 in those old
days--and boy, did the horses look tough afterward! (Of course, this was
also before fit-to-continue days, too--I'll wager most of them weren't!)
That was why AERC completely scrapped rides under 50 miles for awhile, before
coming back with the LD concept.
