The Vermont 100
Is anybody going to the Vermont 100 (technically, the Green Mountain
Horseman's Association 100 Mile Trail Ride) this weekend? As either
spectator or competitor?
For those who don't know, the Vermont 100 is one of the oldest (if
not *the* oldest) organized trail ride in the United States. It has
been held annually since c1937. It was started by members of
The Morgan Horse Club (now the American Morgan Horse Association)
and others who wanted to continue the challenge that had been
presented by the US Army Cavalry's multiday distance horse trials that
had been held in the northeast during the 1910's and 20's.
The ride is a 3-day CTR. I believe the breakdown is 40, 40, 20.
It is staged from the grounds of the Green Mountain Horseman's
Association just outside picturesque Woodstock, Vermont. (The GMHA
grounds are the former Robert Lippitt Knight Green Mountain Stock Farm.
Morgan enthusiasts will recognize that this as "The Lippitt Farm.")
They are also holding a two-day 60 in conjunction with this year's
event.
In New England trail riding circles, The Vermont 100 has all the
prestige, status, and tradition of a Tevis or Old Dominion.
Hope to see you there!
