Re: RC: RE: holds at rides

At my ride several years ago I had a long stretch from what was to be
the last hold and camp - about 19 miles. I decided to put in a check
about 6 miles out of camp. I just wanted the vets to take one last look
at the horses. The options were a stop and go or a short hold. After a
lot of discussion I decided on a 15 minute hold. That way if a group
came in together - say front runners - the person to get an P&R person
first would not have an advantage. It also took the pressure off the
vets so they could do their job.

I think the 15 minute hold is was a good solution.

One minor problem is a 45 minute hold is this puts a big requirement on
the pulse takers (or out timer or whoever does it at a given ride) to
calculate the out time in a hurry. Thirty minutes is easy and 40 minutes
is much easier than 45 minutes. So I would vote for 40 minute holds
over 45 minute holds.

I was at one ride where a addition mistake was made adding 45 minutes to
get the out time. That mistake determined the winner.
