Re: grades steeper than 20%

% grade is vertical distance as a per cent of horizontal distance. A 45
degree would be a 100%. To determine angle, first divided the grade by 100
and then take the arctangent.

10% 5.7 deg
20% 11.3 deg
50% 26.6 deg

There are a couple of steep ski runs that run about 40 degrees. 20% (11
deg.) would not be steep as a ski hill, but it is a pull for the horse if
sustained over distance, but well within its capabilities.

RE: grades steeper than 20%

I've always wondered how the steepness is "graded".

The highways thru the White Mtns in New Hampshire and some of the
highways in Colorado, have signs stating what the % grade is.

A 15% grade is a burn-your-brakes-out-downhill-nightmare.

I can only imagine how steep 20% is.... I imagine some skii-trails
to be >20%.

Anybody out there know how to convert %grade into an angle???
(like what % grade is about the same as a 45 degree slope(angle))

Sombody's gotta know this!

Barb
