Paso? Did you say Paso? I have one of those. I bought him almost a year
ago, last October at a horse auction. The first day I had him he threw a
fit and bolted around acting like a fool. I was wondering what I had gotten
myself into. Since then he's been as good as gold. The best trained horse
I ever owned. Until last weekend. He started by doing a little number that
involved crow hopping and little half bucks while I was riding him in the
pasture. I managed to stop him and kicked my feet out of the stirrups and
started to dismount to make sure there wasn't a physical problem - and he's
off! As I'm attempting to haul myself back into an upright position with
only my right leg, I'm thinking, "DAMN, this little Paso is FAST." About
that time he swerved and spun around, and he and I parted ways. As my
helmet clunked the ground, visions of barrel racing jackpots danced in my
head. Of course, I had to stagger to my feet and go ride him round the
pasture one more time and he behaved perfectly.
So, are these little Paso explosions a breed trait? My primary suspect was
poor saddle fit - he's lost some weight since I bought that particular
saddle. However, I've slung some really crappy saddles on his back before
and he knew better than to behave like that. I'm thinking that all the brio
just goes to their heads sometimes. If I can harness that brio, maybe I'll
have a decent endurance horse? Once I grow back the hide that was peeled
from my hands (oh yeah, never stick your hands out to break your fall), we
will begin conditioning in earnest.
