Sound horses lame at check in!

We went to a race one time - I think it was the American River - opened
the trailer door, calmly led Paul's calm mare out of the trailer, and
she stepped right in to a hole.  Dead lame, that was it for that race &
for a long time afterwards. It was a 3 1/2 hour ride home.

Another time we had the same mare entered in Fireworks.  A friend showed
up and begged to put her horse in the other portable pen we had.  Etta,
Paul's mare, objected, squealed and struck out at the gelding (whom she
knew perfectly well, having had him visit our property before - but hey,
she's an Appy, need I say more?).  Pulled a tendon.  Dead lame.  At
least we were only half an hour from home that time.  Lif
