Electrolytes Useage

Wendy Merendini merendiniws@navair.navy.mil
Tammy,
The use of electolytes you describe may work for us in the West, but trust me when you are riding in the heat AND humidity of the East it is a different ballgame altogether. You cannot "catch up" on the lytes and by not giving enough during the course of the ride (whether the horse is drinking or not) you may be setting your horse up for some real problems. I have ridden hot and humid rides (WEC Dubai and USET Festival in NJ) and if you do not give the electrolytes, you will be in serious danger of only not finishing, but causing harm to your horse. I would same both Linda and Angie are correct - give the lytes and slow down.

In other words, you cannot apply our normal Western practices to Eastern rides.
