Fireworks
Merryben posted the following Tuesday and I just saw it. Last year I
rode the Fireworks 30. At one point my partner and I were cantering
down a gorgeous, wide, shady, curvy dirt road when we suddenly came
upon a woman walking with a little girl about 4 years old. We
immediately slowed to a walk and passed them on the opposite side of
the road from where they were standing. As we went by, I heard the
woman telling the child, "See, THEY aren't so scary!" I realized that
earlier riders must have passed them at a canter and scared the little
girl. This does not seem to me to be a good way to make friends,
influence people, and recruit more riders for the future. I was
amazed, though, at the audience at this ride - and frequently they were
much nearer the horses than I would have liked. Don't know if it was
so bad this year, since I think the route didn't go so close to the
UCSC campus.
Just my 2 cents.
Robin (and Boo, who didn't do Fireworks last year and wasn't ready
this, but may get to do it next!)

And why were they not walking past the hikers? This is a huge problem
in
Santa Cruz and Santa Clara Counties. Hope this was just a joking
