Tammy,
I've found some horses who would simply "hold out" for their familiar buckets & spot at the trailer at short distances. After her first 50, my old mare learned to slurp from muddy footprints if she came across one!! She became MUCH more self sufficient after her first slow 50... rough ride in the mountains of VA, took nearly 11.5 hrs. It was a great learning experience for her.
I wouldn't hold my horse to a shorter distance until it "clicked" for them, but I would be very cautious on a longer ride & ride it conservatively.

Don't consider doing more miles until he will be a good
drinker and eater.
