If you're trying to keep up with a 16 mph trot, I'd say let your horse
keep cantering. Have you ever tried walking next to someone who walks a
lot faster? If someone told me to "extend my walk" it would work only
so far - since my natural walk is slower, I'd just tire myself out by
extending. Same thing with horses and trotting. You can teach your
horse to extend, but that doesn't necessarily mean his extended trot
will be as fast as 16 mph. If you force the issue, you may find your
horse tiring more quickly, or injuring himself. Lif
