Pan Am followup
In the previous story about the Pan Am ride, I mentioned my friend was
bumped into by my horse and clipped by his hoof. She took the horse back to
the trailer, but didn't come back, herself. When I got there she was
cleaning his pen. I looked at her foot and said "Are you bleeding?" She
said no, but I said "Yes you are". Her whole sock was red. there was a
nasty cut on her heel.
Now, our chef, Grace couldn't see the 6 hour round trip to Winnipeg to see
a doctor. She looked at our team vet, Wes Elford and asked if he could do
something. Now Wes is a very good equine vet with a special interest in
distance horses. I'm sure he would have made a fine MD if his interests
were that way. I'm even more sure now. Grace gave Peggy a beer of which
she had 2-3 sips and Wes put in 6 nice stitches. He had me come with him,
so I could watch to make sure Peggy didn't pass out. That wasn't a danger
in her case. we kept it clean and she hobbled around the next 2 days still
being a fine crew. Fortunately my husband had decided to come at the last
minute. Carrying full buckets wasn't easy, especially with only one good
foot.
When we got home Peggy's teenage boys thought that was the coolest thing
of all. You know teenage boys, they can get there kicks out of lots of
things.
