Yes, I had a horse that would do almost anything to get me onto the right
diagonal only. I bought him as an experienced distance horse and he had
been ridden always on the right. If I did ride the left diagonal, he felt
absolutely lame as he was much weaker on that side. I insisted on working
with the left diagonal and eventually I could only feel a slight difference
in the strength of the two sides. This took about two years! From all
those earlier years of being exclusively on the right he had a slight
lameness in the stifle and as he got older it got more noticeable.
So, yes, change your diagonal and always keep your horse equally balanced
on both sides. I make a point of knowing which diagonal I'm on and
switching regularly. I've done the standing bit, also and have damaged my
knees on a rough going horse.
