Yep they do sampling and averaging estimating the heart rate. Not only
that there is about a six second lag in the reading. That is depending
on the model, the reading is what the pulse was six seconds ago.
They also take time to get the initial reading and about 30 seconds to
get an accurate reading. So all in all, they are a great tool, but it
will most likely take longer to get a good reading with a HRM than a
human.
