Equine Brain Farts (was Self Preservation)

Maureen A. Fager Maureen_Fager@mei.memec.com
Hi Jill and All,
I enjoyed reading your comments. I once had a freind who
saddle trained two young horses after ponying them for
a long time. She was a recreational trail rider and the
young horses were able to get many slow miles in a variety
of locations and it worked well for those horses. Blaze and
I did not have that opition in his training, but I would like
to try it with a young horse if I ever get the chance. You
commented that your horse rode like "a seasoned 8 year old",
which indicates to me that miles and experience are what
many young horses need.

As for your other filly, that situation is the most telling, and
I believe illistrates the dilemea that is underlying this thread:
what to do with a horse that presents us with problems, training
issues, even perhaps personalities that we either don't like,
don't know how to handle, or too much for the time and effort
one may be willing to put into a paticular horse. You made the
best decision for your filly, as I feel I made for my horse.

I thought that all the folks who answered this thread had
something to say, and all of the ideas offered were
different. I hope the woman who started this thread will
share with us how she works her paticular problems, as I
for one and interested to know what happens.

Happy Trails,

Maureen and Blaze
