Re: Scratches

Tamara,
I have a chestnut mare with three white feet. In the summer, every
summer, she has a tendency to get scratches. I prevent that and cure it
with a simple remedy that my farrier gave me. I mix 1/3 Clorox bleach,
with 2/3 water in a spray bottle and apply that every day for three days
in a row, and then once or twice a week thereafter. Clorine bleach will
kill any kind of fungus that there is, and that is the secret to
clearing it up. If bacteria are involved, I alternate with a gentocin
spray that I get from my vet for a skin problem that some of my husbands
dogs get during the summer. (Gentocin spray is very expensive.) So far
this has worked well for me since I have had my "sensitive" mare.
Scratches is no longer a problem for us.
There are porducts out there that work. A veterinarian told me that
creams and ointments will hold moisture in to the area, which is not
good. A product that will dry the area out is best. Betadine may not be
enough.
I hope you have good success curing your problem.

horse)
