Accolades
I have been associated with the Tevis Cup Ride in one capacity or another for
35 years. In that time, I can recall no accident as serious as Debby Lyon's
ten days ago. Thousands have ridden this trail and the ride has a truly
remarkablel safety record. A few broken bones here and there, but nothing
life threatening. The Tevis Sweep riders are trained in emergency first aid
care and, I think (not sure), have to be ham radio operators. Dr. Leonard
Davis, a fellow rider, jeopardized his ride for his 1000 mile buckle by
remaining at her side until she was evacuated. He then went on to finish the
ride successfully.
Debby Lyon has accepted her accident with grace and dignity and has not
blamed anyone.. She is home now and her attitude is great. I think it is time
we talked about the people who rose to the occasion...the drag riders,
Leonard Davis and most of all, the person who was in the wrong place at the
wrong time, Debby Lyon.

P.S. It seems to me it would have been hard for the "breast collarless" rider
to have "ridden on" as claimed when he was flat on the ground and his horse
was galloping down the mountainside with the saddle under its belly. But I
was not there so should not comment on that.
