Re: DEET

Years ago I put some Deep Woods Off spray on my mare's ears - it contains 28% DEET. I was in the woods and she was being eaten alive by deer flies. I had the spray in my saddle bag for me, hadn't packed any horse spray for her. Over the next 24 hours, all the hair fell off her ears and the skin blistered. Eventually the hair grew back, but boy did I feel stupid! Horses have more sensitive skin than people. I would not recommend it. Have you tried one of those silly hats with the fringe that hangs down over the horse's eyes?

Anyone know if it's safe to put DEET based fly repellent (for humans) on horses faces?  Absorbine Supershield repels them ok if you can soak your horse in it, but that's hard to do on my horse's face.  Thought maybe the stinkier DEET based stuff would keep them further at bay.
