HRM and Pain
I, too, had a similar experience with a heart rate monitor. We were on a
short ride, nothing special, just trotting along at a HR of about 93
when all of a sudden the HRM shot up to 204. I didn't notice anything
for a few strides and then Jake went dead lame. We slowed to a walk.
Then, after a quarter-mile the HRM went back down to about 68. I tried
trotting again and sure enough, that horse was fine. I think he must
have taken a wrong step and it hurt for a minute and then he was able to
work out of it. It sure surprised me to be able to tell that he was in
pain even before I could feel it.
