That is one more reason for looking at pedigrees, too. Also, there is a skill
to evaluating horses in less than optimum condition. I have seen all too many
so-called breeders belittle OLD mares because they no longer look like Miss
America, but if one gets used to looking at the structure under the less-than-
beautiful surface, one can often reconstruct in one's mind's eye what they
once were. Many very successful Thoroughbred breeders got their start on a
shoestring researching great old mares and picking them up for a song. Have
been fortunate myself that way with some grand old Arabian brood matrons that
others passed over because they weren't quite as spiffy as the younger models.
But my goodness, the wonderful daughters they have given me that now populate
my brood band!
