Re: RC: VT 100 & over riding [long]
As a RM of several rides, one which turned into a demolition derby, I think
Teddy is exactly right. At my ride we had problems on was in FL on the last
weekend in March. It was one of these very muggy spring days caused by an
approaching cold front. We knew it was going to be humid and at the ride
meeting and four vets and the RM warned of this and told the riders to take
it easy.
Next morning it was about 65 deg and 99.9% humidity (it wasn't raining yet
but almost). The head vet said he has never pulled as many horses at the
first check for metabolics either before or after as he did at this ride. I
think the reason was the riders felt cool and were really cooking the first
loop and the horse that was doing all the work was not cooling. I don't
think any rider was being abusive, but I just don't think they realized how
bad the conditions were. If the riders would get down a jog with their
horses for a while, they would probably ride a whole lot differently.
