Holy Hay Mites, Batman!
A heartfelt thanks to the people who sent information and
condolences.
Probably the most eye-opening fact I learned was that I had, in
fact, heard of "hay mites" before--but under a different name.
The southern species of hay mite is the "Chigger"! I have been
mauled by Canadian Chiggers!
The chiggers seem to have died down, if not out. The hay dealer
owns up to one semi-truck load of hay that was definitely chigger
infested. They bought it in early June from somebody who was not
one of their standard suppliers as some of the last of last year's
hay crop to tide them over until this year's Canadian first cut
became available in late June. They maintain that that was the
only load, and that the chiggers should die out soon and not become
a chronic problem.
The prednisone certainly helped, and I have the names of several
topical pesticide treatments that southern doctors are well familiar
with that I can give to my baffled Yankee doctor should the bites
start up again.
Heaven forbid!
