    Does (did) the horse have a heart murmur, to your knowledge?
    A severe cardio-myopathy may evince "some" of the pathology you 
described.  It can look like a severe colic, with extremely elevated pulse 
and respiration (including, but not "always", full body sweating), and high 
fever.
    What is the age of the horse you described?
     "Panting"?
