In Kahlil's case, although he's completed rides in 18 separate ride years, he
accumulated over 10,000 of his 11,525 miles in about 12 years. We would usually
alternate a "tough" season with over 1,000 miles with an "easy" season of about
500. He completed his last 50 last year at the age of 24.
I rode him for most of those miles, but he's had a few other riders from time to
time, about 500 miles worth. My wife Kat rode him in some LD rides last year
too, and still rides him around home.
Kahlil did most of those miles racing for first place -- over 10,000 of the
miles are Top Ten and over 9,500 are Top Five. He also won 49 Best Conditions
along the way, and 40 First Places (Senior Overall; I really don't know how many
weight division wins). A rarity for a high-mileage horse.
I didn't have the multi-day rides available to me, either. We only completed
one five-day (250-mile) ride, the Shore to Shore. A couple of two-day rides,
all the rest of the miles are one-day rides. Over 3,000 miles is in 100-mile
one-day rides.
(Does it show that I'm proud of the old boy?)
