I would think it takes more to make a good trail horse than it takes to make
"just" a show horse. There are so many details in making a great trail horse
... ability to accept all sorts of external stimuli (wild animals, dogs
bounding out of the brush, birds flying up in the face, deep or swift water,
rocks or boulders, brush crawling, log hopping, bicycles, cars, motorcycles,
etc.) how to open and close swinging gates, acceptance of limbs dropping on
the head when the rider has lopped them off with a tool, acceptance of limbs,
rope, wire being accidentally caught around the legs without panicking, how
to negotiate all manners of terrain and obstacles, etc., etc. I've seen
horses trained to death in an arena that are totally lost out in the REAL
world. Give me a good trail horse any day!
