spotters

My bad...BIG mistake. We actually send out some of our best to be
spotters occasionally, but we have made the mistake of "dropping off"
anyone who was willing at times. I've come to realize that not everyone
understands a spotter's job and what seems self explanatory isn't always
so. If I have an intersection where the 25's should go one way and the
50's the other, and someone comes in from the wrong direction...what does
the spotter do? If it's the ride manager they probably can imagine where
the mistake was made and offer a solution... I apparently am guilty of
putting someone out to spot and then not explaining their job or what
might go wrong in that spot.
A spotter with a sick sense of humor is a problem too. My husband was
once a spotter at a place where the riders had to do a loop off and then
back to the same spot on the trail and carry on. Bill was just sitting
around on his horse like he was out for a pleasure ride. He watched 2
riders take the loop, then heard them as they returned saying, "Uh-oh,
we're back where that guy is...did we miss a turn? *panic, panic*" Bill
managed to look alarmed that they were back and said, "What are ya'll
doing back HERE?" They almost had heart attacks.
