Horses ARE judged separately from their riders in NATRC. However, they are
also judged on how well they can do some things. LIKE negotiating a gnarly
bog, or down and out, or steep up-hill -- we're talking control here. etc.
etc. And, yes, maybe they're judged on how well they listen to their rider
when asked to open a gate or manuver through something. Speaking as a person
who has ridden the Tevis, the Outlaw Trail, the Virginia City 100 and a bunch
of AERC 50's,(and, boy, I'm not done yet!) I truly believe that the
principles of NATRC are sound. The horse should be part of a team with the
rider. The care and consideration of the horse comes first (like it or not)
-- even IF they are tied to the horse trailer during the process -- eeek!
Nobody likes being criticized. However, fact of life here, we can all do
better. what is so wrong with opening oneself to a little examination? Are
we all so perfect that we don't need perfecting? All this being said, I am
realizing that NATRC is not a totally popular sport among the endurance
minded -- sad to say. Soooo, blast away!
