I don't want to offend anyone, but I'll offer my opinion. I would not want to
leave my horse tied to a trailer unattended, especially overnight. The tie rings
are for tacking up, not long-term restraint. Even tied short there is
unnecessary risk. If he's tied long enough to lie down the risk is rather
great.
A horse that spends the night standing up because he's tied to a trailer is not
going to be able to perform as well as if he had been able to lie down at will
during the night. It's also less pleasant for the horse to be tied in one place
for that length of time.
If you don't want to use a portable corral, at least a picket line allows the
horse to move about and lie down, away from the hazards that are part and parcel
of all trailers.
