scratches in my 40+ years of owning horses (mostly in Iowa)  until wemoved to
this place.  I found that clipping the hair helped...long hairs just trapped the
moisture in next to the skin.  At least if the horses were out of the water for
a while, it all dried off.  I routinely walk around with my cordless clippers
and clip, clip, clip....seems to work for me...
