I really think it depends on what sort of driving you plan to do. If you are
doing a lot of towing on the highway and dealing with city traffic, then an
automatic might do you very well. I see you live in Louisianna, so snow and
ice are not likely an issue for you either. Where I live in the NW, I deal
with a lot of ice and snow in the winter, and also have to do a fair amount
of "off-road" towing, not to mention hauling hay to horses in mud and snow.
For that, I wouldn't have anything but a manual tranny. My old Ford gas rig
that has 400,000 hard miles is still on its original tranny and has had
nothing done in that department other than replacing the clutch occasionally.
I got my first automatic truck about 3 years ago, and could hardly WAIT to
trade it back in on a standard--finally got a manual diesel truck (all Fords,
BTW) and am SO much happier with the performance of the tranny for what I
have to do. I will admit, though, it IS a pain when I have to haul through
city traffic.
